Stir staged against Panchayat Raj bill

Last Updated 15 July 2009, 18:02 IST

The proposed bill has recommended curbing of the powers authorised to the Gram  Panchayat.

Speaking to the media here on Wednesday, Panchayat Raj Okkuta Udupi Taluk President Deviprasad Shetty opined that curtailing the existing powers of the Gram Panchayat will massively affect the process of the  decentralisation of powers.

This is against the recommendations in the 73rd amendment of the Constitutional Act. The decentralisation of powers strengthened by the three tier local self government is synonymous with the democratic system of governance in the country. Rigorous agitation will be staged by the Union against passing the bill in the Assembly, he informed.
Speaking on the occasion, Panchayat Raj Okkuta Karkala taluk President Neere Krishnamurthy informed it is a non-political fight.

Gram Panchayat Okkuta Karkala Taluk President Ravindra Nayak, Gram Panchayat Hakkotthaya Andolan State Secretary Damodhar, Concern for Working Children Convener Ganapathy and others were present.

Earlier, the Union staged a protest in front of the DC office and forwarded a memorandum to Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and Minister for Panchayat Raj Shobha Karandlaje through in-charge DC Prasanna Kumar.
