A scientist, Dr Dinesh and his wife Navyarani and their 10-month-old baby were scheduled to return home on March 20. Left with nothing after the tragedy, they have taken shelter in a relief centre.

Dinesh, the son of Rangappa from Jinnenahalli in Hiresave hobli, had met a scientist from the University of Sendai, in Mysore University 10 years ago. The meeting led to two projects for Dinesh in Japan.

After securing his doctoral degree, Dinesh married Navyarani, a doctor, in 2006. Having completed his 10-year contract term, Dinesh had planned to return home on March 20. They had scheduled their son’s christening ceremony soon after coming home. The couple called their relatives in Hiresave on Tuesday to inform them about their plight. They didn’t even have money to feed the baby, or to return home.

Navyarani, speaking to Deccan Herald over the phone said: “The citizens of other countries have already been rescued. But, none from the Indian embassy have contacted us.” Their efforts to contact the embassy were unsuccessful.

“We are eagerly waiting for the help. We need at least a couple of lakhs of rupees to return home,” Dinesh said.

“It’s difficult to live here with the baby starving,” the couple said.
