Structural engineers associated with construction of some of the Indian reactors including the two 220 MWe units at Narora in Uttar Pradesh – which face the maximum seismic risk – said periodic safety assessments were undertaken to improve the safety features.
Asked about the possible impact of a big earthquake in the Himalayas, about which scientists were cautioning for long, D K Paul, a senior scientist at the Department of Earthquake Engineering at IIT, Roorkee, said the structural design of Narora factored in the risk of a big quake in the Himalayas and presence of nearby Moradabad fault.
