The ‘animal’ with its long, waving tail and a sleeker body doesn’t resemble the dragon in any way. Ditto the plot and its handling. This tale of a cop nicknamed Dragon rescuing the kidnapped daughter of a land developer from the clutches of the baddies while dispensing with a lesson or two withers away at the first snort of the digitally created animal.
Made on a shoe-string budget, the shortcomings are pretty glaring, even without the ‘actors’ adding to the mess, like when the builder informs his partner that his daughter and son-in-law are honeymooning in Spain while the couple is shown strolling around the streets of Singapore or when a FedEx is shown to be their honeymoon flight...
Sound recording is atrocious to say the least and the acoustics at Kapali doesn’t help matters. Music again is feeble. Using handycams and other devices to cut costs has also eaten away the output quality. This Dragon slays several myths - of the film being a thriller, of Thriller Manju satisfying hard core action fans, of a coherent plot... After Dragon, even an average Jason Lee flick would be a welcome distraction.
