Maddur: Bridegroom escapes with cash, gold ornaments

He, along with his family members, were said to be missing eventhough his marriage is fixed on June 3. The bride’s parents have already distributed wedding invitation cards. The accused is B M Raghavendra of Bangalore.

His marriage was fixed with B N Sowmya, daughter of Jayarasamma and B N Ningappa and the marriage was supposed to be held on June 3 at Shaswathi Kalyana Mantapa in Koppa of the taluk.

Their engagement took place on April 8 in the village. At the time of pre- marriage discussion, Raghavendra’s parents had demanded a site in Bangalore, ` two lakh dowry, 150 grams of gold ornaments and marriage at Shashwathi Kalyan Mantap at Koppa.

Sowmya’s parents agreed and gave ` one lakh as dowry 100 grams of gold ornaments to Raghavendra. They also promised to hold marriage at Shaswathi  Kalyan Mantap.

More demands

On May 22,  B M Raghavendra came to Sowmya’s house with his parents, relatives and demanded ` two lakh cash and a site failing which he threatened to break the alliance. Efforts made by the bride’s parents to convince the would-be son-in-law proved futile.
Meanwhile, Raghavendra and his parents have locked their house and have escaped. The accused is said to be a driver working in Bangalore. The bride’s father,  Ningappa has filed a complaint at Koppa Police Station.
