Special Judge (anti-dacoity) Rajendra Sharma, while pronouncing the verdict, termed the case the “rarest of the rare” and said that the accused deserved death sentence. He also referred to the recent Supreme Court observations that honour killing accused deserved death penalty.

According to the prosecution, Vidya Pal, daughter of the main accused Ramesh Pal, had an affair with Uday Pal Singh and the two had eloped in October 2008. They, however, returned to the village a month later after assured being assured by Ramesh Pal that no harm would come to them.

Ramesh, with the help of a few others, mainly his family, later shot dead the unsuspecting couple and the brother of Uday after severely thrashing them.
