But, if your kind of market is low-key, organic, laced with some pep talk with the expert shopkeeper who will enhance your knowledge about fruits, head straight to Jeevamrita. The newly opened shop is located behind State Bank of India near Mahajana High School, in Jayalakshmipuram. Here, you can not only be sure that the mangoes are not ‘force-ripened’ en masse by means of using chemicals, but are allowed to gain and retain the natural colour and aroma -- the natural way.

At the Mango Parishe which was held on Friday, to mark the opening of the Jeevamrita - started by environmentalist, progressive thinker and organic food expert Ugranarasimhe Gowda, the fruit looked a lot dull in looks, but rich in aroma.

The Parishe was inaugurated by K R Krishnaiah, joint director of agriculture. The buyers, which included people from all walks of life, were surprised to see the fruit being made available at such low prices.

“They are directly from the farmers,” Ugranarasimhe Gowda would explain to his customers, regarding the price difference. Senior citizens were completely at home with this pattern of buying, and also the varieties of the fruits. Trust seemed to play the most important role in this buyer-seller relationship.

A leisurely talk, a word or two about the family, a bit about the fruit and then the process of buying ensued.  Apart from the usual varieties like Raspuri (Rs 34), Mallika (Rs 42), Badami (Rs 55), Alphonse (Rs 55) and Malagoa (Rs 50) all per kg rates, two varieties of Katamavu or Kaadumaavu or native mango (Rs 28 each) are on sale.

Apart from this, you can also buy jaggery sans any chemicals, desi rice varieties and organically grown turmeric and some vegetables and greens too.

Parishe will be on till the stocks last. If you are a mango lover, you should waste no time and rush with your bags there!
