Dispur clash: RTI activist and pro-farmer outfit leader arrested

Gogoi, the leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has been charged with 10 cases of rioting, arsoning, damaging public property and illegal meeting amid reports that the Assam government is also considering slapping National Security Aact(NSA) against him.
Accusing him of instigating violent activists in Dispur area here on Wednesday in which three persons were killed and over 50 injured, the police took him into custody when he was addressing a crowded press conference.

Altogether ten cases, including four non-bailable ones, were registered against Gogoi with the police accusing him of being responsible for leading the violent activists demanding land deed for the government land which they had encroached on the hills.

The Assam Government has ordered an inquiry by Additional Chief Secretary Surajit Mitra into the clash.

As a large posse of policemen arrived at the Press Club to arrest the KMSS leader, Gogoi continued to speak to the media persons alleging that the police had attacked "innocent and peaceful protestors who were democratically demonstrating against their eviction from their homes on Wednesday".

On journalists urging the police to allow Gogoi to complete his press conference, the police personnel ignored their pleas stating they were bound by law to immediately arrest him.
As he was being taken away from the Press Club, the KMSS leader urged the people of the state to come out peacefully to protest his arrest and along with his supporters shouted `Inqilab Jindabad'.

Gogoi was whisked away to Pan Bazar police station with the administration taking all security measures so that a violent protest or situation did not arise after his arrest.
