SC extends stay on Hasan Ali release

Last Updated 25 August 2011, 18:48 IST

A bench of Justices Altmas Kabir and S S Nijjar allowed a plea by Additional Solicitor General Harin Rawal and extended the stay on operation of the bail order passed by Bombay High Court till September 2.

The HC had granted bail to Khan on August 12 which was stayed by the apex court on August 16. The stay was to expire on August 26.

The court directed criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani and others, the petitioners in the public interest litigation seeking direction to bring back money stashed by a few Indians in foreign countries, to submit written submission on September 1, the next date of hearing.
The Bench wanted the written submission on the maintainability of the application filed by the Centre to withdraw an order passed by the Supreme Court earlier forming special investigation team to monitor probe in black money cases. The Centre had on Wednesday claimed that the apex court’s order constituting SIT with two former SC judges as chairman and vice-chairman was not feasible and it could become a virtual superpower.

Report on gutkha ban
An  apex court bench has asked the Centre to file a report as to how far it was able to implement its order banning the use of plastic sachet by gutkha manufacturers.
The Bench sought the report after an NGO submitted before it that the government had failed to implement the court order.
