The shopkeeper repaired the phone and returned it to Vinod. He had inserted the SIM card in the name of a woman in Vinod’s handset and had forgotten to remove it.<br /><br />Played pranks<br />Vinod found that most of the numbers stored in the SIM card belonged to women. He decided to play pranks with them. He then sent lewd messages and those which indicated Vinod had intimate relationship with them. <br /><br />The 60 women belonged to different parts of the State. He sent between three to five messages a day, said JP Nagar Police Inspector S K Umesh.<br /><br />Tension in families<br />A couple of weeks ago, one of them received an obscene message a day after her marriage. Her husband, who read the message, presumed his wife had an affair before marriage. He took her and her parents to task. This resulted in tension between the two families, police said.<br /><br />A month ago, a homemaker received a message which indicated that the sender had an affair with her. The homemaker’s husband saw the message, triggering a quarrel between the couple, who were married for five years. The misunderstanding threatened to end the marriage.<br /><br />The parents of some of the victims, after reading the messages, took their daughters to task, suspecting that they had relationships before marriage. The efforts of the victims to trace the sender failed as the cellphone was always switched off. <br /><br />A software which converts male voice to female voice instantly helped the police zero in on Vinod. Based on a complaint by a woman, a police officer contacted him on Sunday when Vinod had inserted the SIM card. <br /><br />The officer, whose voice was changed to a woman’s voice, asked him to come to a particular place. The police took him into custody as soon as he arrived.<br /><br />Vinod told the police that he decided to make as many female friends as possible. Hence, he sent the messages.
