Electoral rolls in Goa rigged, says BJP

Last Updated 29 October 2011, 18:49 IST

According to the party thousands of voters’ names have been duplicated in various constituencies and in some cases different voters have been allotted the same EPIC (elector’s photo identity card) number.

BJP leader Manohar Parrikar who led a delegation to chief electoral officer Gonesh Koyu said a close scrutiny of the revised rolls had thrown up over 20,000 names that had been repeated and over 3500 voters with the same EPIC number. Another 76,000 entries had same names, same father’s names and similar ages. Elections are due in Goa before May 2012 and the BJP said it wanted the rolls corrected before then.

Glitches in the electoral rolls abounded in constituencies such as Ponda, Mormugao, Taleigao and Margao, said Parrikar.  Margao is Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s constituency and Mormugao has a BJP MLA. Ponda and Taleigao are however, with the Congress.
