Runaway hit

The promo of the song, which was released on November 16, became an instant hit on social networking sites for its quirky ‘Tanglish’ (Tamil–English) lyrics. Sung by popular Tamil movie star Dhanush, the song from the upcoming Tamil movie ‘3’ has now become an Internet rage.

   The promo features Dhanush, son-in-law of superstar Rajnikanth, singing the song in a studio, and composer Anirudh (who happens to be Rajnikanth’s nephew)
playing the piano, while wife and director Aishwarya Rajnikanth and co-star Shruti Hassan watch along and give suggestions.

“‘Why this kolaveri di’. 24 hours 83000 you tube views. Thank you guys. For making it the most viewed you tube video in music category yesterday. God bless (sic),” Dhanush had written on the micro-blogging site Twitter on the day of the release of the song.

The song ‘Kolaveri’ appeared as the number one Indian trend on Twitter on November 21. The lyrics of the peppy song are simple and since it is a live recording, Dhanush keeps firing instructions while singing, making it more endearing. 

The lyrics of the song go like this — ‘Yo boys I am singing song soup song flop song why this kolaveri kolaveri kolaveri di.’

The song’s popularity is growing and it is being broadcast on Hindi FM channels.  The song also got the distinction of being the first Tamil song to be premiered on a national music channel, MTV.
