Last Updated 29 December 2011, 12:45 IST

Close on the heels of a girl and her relatives attacked by a jilted lover, the city witnessed a similar incident on Thursday.

Madhuri Hegde, a resident of Dewan’s road here, was coming out after writing company secretary exams at Mahajana PU College in Jayalakshmipuram when Rakesh attacked her with a cudgel. Madhuri, who suffered a cut on her forehead, was also left with severed fingers on her right hand, according to eye-witnesses. Madhuri’s father Ramachandra Hegde, who was waiting outside to fetch his daughter, rushed her to a private hospital nearby. Madhuri is stated to be out of danger.

Madhuri was recently married to Shylendra, a software engineer at Hyderabad. She came in contact with Rakesh of Gokulam here, at the same exams held at the college last year. Rakesh, son of Sundar C Babu, was studying B Com then. He had proposed to marry Madhuri, only to be rejected by her father.

Rakesh, who developed grudge towards Madhuri, went berserk after her marriage. However, it is not known whether Madhuri was interested in Rakesh. He was waiting for Madhuri in the library of the college and attacked her. Madhuri, started running, but couldn’t run for long, only to suffer injuries. Ramachandra heard somebody screaming and rushed inside, only to find his daughter in a pool of blood.

He, along with his friends Harish and Prakash, shifted her to the hospital. Rakesh, who tried to escape, was cornered by other students, before handing him over to Jayalakshmipuram police. Principal J Krishna Swamy, in a press release, has clarified that the college is a centre for company secretary exams conducted by ICSI, and the students involved in the incident were outsiders. Hence the institute has nothing to do with the issue.
