Woman sleeps on floor in MCD hospital, Mayor orders probe

Mayor Rajni Abbi has ordered an inquiry into alleged ill-treatment of a pregnant rape victim at Swami Dayanand Hospital in Shahdara. Abbi has asked the municipal commissioner to submit a report in five days on the issue.

“We will take action against any official found guilty,”  said Yogendra Mann, public information officer, MCD.

Abbi’s order came after a delegation of BJP Mahila Morcha brought the case to her notice. A 23-year-old pregnant woman, who was allegedly raped by her neighbour on January 5, spent five days at an MCD-run hospital without any doctor or nurse attending her.

The victim said she was made to sleep on the floor, and then was asked to share a bed in the general ward of the gynaecology department. She was discharged on Monday. The woman is three-month pregnant and lives in Seelampur.

Hospital records show that her medical examination was completed on the night of January 5, and she was admitted for a test to ascertain whether the foetus was safe.

Abbi has also asked the police to find out whether any cops were involved in the alleged ill-treatment of the woman.

Couple let off by court

A Delhi court has absolved a couple of the charges of harassing their sister-in-law for dowry, setting aside a magisterial court order against them.

Additional Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna set aside the court order against west Delhi resident Naresh Kumar and his wife saying there was not enough evidence to frame charges of harassment for dowry against them. The sessions court acquitted the husband-wife duo on a plea by them challenging the magisterial court order.

“On scrutinising the record, I am of the opinion that allegations against the petitioners are not of definite nature and no specific role has been attributed to each of them for subjecting the complainant to cruelty,” the ASJ said.

The court pointed out that in matrimonial cases, the general practice is to file complaints against all the family members, without regard to their position and status.
