Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday tried to garner leverage from the EC’s directive to drape all statues of elephants (BSP’s symbol) and Mayawati herself.

“I know that you (people) were pained by the EC’s decision....your pain and anguish should be reflected in your voting,” Mayawati said addressing election rallies at Barabanki and Sitapur districts in the state.

“Come out and vote in large numbers for the BSP candidates...that will be your reply to the EC”,  she added. The BSP supremo listed the achievements of her government during the past four-and-half-years and said that it had taken several steps for the welfare of all sections of the society.

She also referred to sacking of a large number of her cabinet colleagues and BSP legislators and denial of tickets to many of them and said that these leaders had managed to sneak into the BSP last time as the “innocent BSP leaders could not understand their real intention”.

“Now, they all have been thrown out and have reached their true home”, she said apparently referring to the induction of some of the expelled BSP leaders into BJP. Targeting the Congress, Mayawati said that it had ruled in the state for 40 years but the state still lagged behind in every field owing to its faulty economic policies.

She also accused the Congress-led UPA government of meting out “step-motherly” treatment to UP.  “We had sought of a special package of Rs 80,000 crore for undertaking developmental projects in the state but the Centre has not provided it so far,” she alleged, adding that despite severe resource crunch, the state government had undertaken measures for the welfare of the people.
