Q I am 20 years-old and I need help with getting rid of scars and dark spots. What are the home remedies I can try? My skin burns and cracks during winter.

A Apply a sunscreen with high SPF before going out in the sun.  Mix rice powder with curd and use it as a facial scrub once or twice a week. Apply and rub gently on the skin in circular motions, specially on the dark spots. Leave it on for a few minutes and then wash with water. Do not apply the scrub on pimples, acne or rash. Mix honey and lemon juice in equal quantities and apply it daily on the face. Wash after 15 minutes with plain water. This will also help to remove tan. Twice a week, apply a face mask. Mix three teaspoons of oatmeal with a teaspoon each of honey, curd and lemon juice, or egg white. Apply on the entire face, avoiding the lips and area around eyes. Wash after half an hour. This will also help to remove tan over a period of time.

Q I have rough hair and I want to make it smooth. I have tried several shampoos and conditioners. However, I never end up getting the effect I want. Should I condition my hair?

A Hair conditioning is a basic hair treatment. It is a temporary treatment and does not cause any permanent changes in hair texture. Conditioners coat the hair and help it to look softer and smoother. They also add shine to the hair and make it look more manageable. You can either use a creamy conditioner, which is rinsed off, or a leave-on type of conditioner. After shampoo, take very little conditioner and massage lightly into the wet hair. Apply a leave-on type of conditioner. Apply it the same way, but do not rinse off.
