Last Updated 06 September 2009, 18:22 IST

Sukhjinder Singh, 22, and Amarjit Singh, 28, are accused of attacking the girl in her seat as the train travelled through southern New South Wales, police said adding that the two have been refused bail. The girl woke up as the men began to restrain her at about 3 am on Wednesday on the Melbourne to Sydney train. “The girl was then allegedly sexually assaulted before she broke free and sought assistance from the rail staff,” the police said in a statement.

The two Indians, who are in Australia on student visas, did not enter a plea during the brief hearing, but the police said they had been charged with aggravated sexual assault. The matter was adjourned until September 16.
