People should consider earth as their family and should take efforts to protect it and preserve its resources, opined Nitte University Chancellor N Vinay Hegde. He was addressing the gathering at the World Environment Day celebrations at Pilikula Nisarga Dhama on Tuesday.

He said that preserving nature is the duty of every one and the efforts in this regard should not be reduced to mere celebrations, but continue the task till he/she attains success. He said that young generation  can effectively contribute to protecting the nature.

He said: “Nature has given us every thing required to live in this world. We have to use it economically, and should also safeguard it.”

He said that there is global warming due to the unscientific use of natural resources and destruction of ecosystems. “Earlier rain used to come when the temperature reaches 32 degree celsius. Recently I had been to Andhra Pradesh, where rain has not come for the last many months, even after the temperature  reaching around 50 degree celsius,” he said.

“Our generation is failed in protecting the nature, but the young generation should
make all their efforts to save mother earth”, he added.

Karnataka Bank Chairman Anantha Krishna said that this is the time we should think seriously about the agriculture sector in India. “We should give same importance to food crops and commercial crops. In the US they are dumping food grains produced in excess where as in Africa, thousands are dying without food,” he said.

Dr L C Soans who was felicitated during the occasion said that even though we have a diverse variety of food crops, in many areas farmers are growing only one crop and if that crop is not giving the yield as expected, the entire area will have to face famine. This shouldn’t happen. We have to grow different crops in same area. Apart from Dr L C Soans, Science Subject Inspector K Subrahmanyam Sharma, Youth scientists Pramod N V, Aditya R H and Rajath Rao were felicitated during the programme.
