Man held for theft

Last Updated 11 June 2012, 20:31 IST

A man was arrested for stealing diamond and gold jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh in Malviya Nagar, police said.

Ram Singh, 28, a resident of Seekar in Rajasthan, worked as a delivery boy for over eight months with Surender, who owns Sai Air Parcel courier company in Karol Bagh.

He had gained Surender’s trust by working hard, said additional deputy commissioner of police (south) P S Kushwah.

But the temptation of a bag full of diamond and gold jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh was too strong. He fled with the consignment along with another colleague to Rajasthan.

He was arrested after Surender approached Kashmere Gate police station on May 21. Surender had asked Singh to deliver the bag to a client in Chandigarh.

He became suspicious about Singh’s activities when he found his phone switched off. Singh, along with Vijender, had gone to ISBT in Kashmere Gate to board a bus to Chandigarh, from where he went missing.

A team of Malviya Nagar police, which was already working on gathering information on active criminals, found out about Singh’s presence in Rajasthan.

A raid was conducted then, but he had shifted from Bikaner to Delhi to sell the jewellery.

After receiving a tip-off that he would come to Malviya Nagar main market, police laid a trap and arrested him. A bag containing jewellery worth Rs 30 lakh was recovered from him.

During interrogation, Singh told police that he was tempted by the huge quantity of jewellery and thought of becoming rich overnight.

He hatched a conspiracy with Vijender to steal the bag. Vijender arranged a new SIM card and cellphone for Singh and took half the share of the booty.

He made Singh board a bus to Jaipur instead of Chandigarh, and he stayed backed in Delhi to inform the owner.

“After Surendra lodged a case, Vijender also went missing and is still absconding,” said Kushwah.
