A 17-year-old has been apprehended for allegedly shooting at a man at Ambedkar Nagar in south-east Delhi last month, police said on Wednesday.

The juvenile was held after Vijay Kumar, 29, who resides at Madangir and has some previous criminal records, sustained bullet injuries in his stomach, chest, thigh and arm on June 27.

Gang rivalry

“An initial probe revealed that Vijay had personal enmity with a man named Ravi Gangwal, who is also a notorious criminal. They regularly try to establish supremacy over each other in crime and the attack was carried out due to the rivalry,” said Ajay Chaudhry, additional commissioner of police (south east).

Cops later managed to apprehend one of the attackers on a tip-off on Tuesday from Anand Vihar ISBT.

“The apprehended boy disclosed that he would turn 18 on July 9, hence wanted to carry out the attack before that,” Chaudhary added.

On June 27, Vijay along with his brother was at a market near Mahila Mangal Charitable Trust in Madangir when two persons opened fire at him.

“Vijay tried to escape, but fell down and was shot at by the juvenile and his accomplice,” said Chaudhary.

Sources said around seven to eight rounds were fired. Vijay was rushed in a critical condition to Batra Hospital, where doctors confirmed that four bullets were pumped into his body.

After the news of the attack spread to Vijay’s supporters, they had turned furious and allegedly attacked Ravi’s group. Two persons were injured during the clash and were admitted to the AIIMS trauma centre.
