Two members of the notorious inter-state Mewati gang have been arrested and several auto theft cases, including June’s shootout at Hira Jewellers in Pitampura, was solved, police said on Thursday.

Sunil Kumar, 32, who hails from Firojpur in Punjab and resides at Chauhan Mohalla
in Delhi, was arrested after police found during investigation that he was in regular
contact with a gang in Mewat area, which is active in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.

He was taken into custody and during interrogation, he revealed the name of
Mohammed Aslam, 37, of Mewat in Haryana. Aslam, who lives at Loni in Uttar Pradesh, was also arrested.

Confession

“The accused were involved in a number of cases of vehicle theft and supply of stolen vehicles to Punjab. Both confessed to their involvements in the shooting case at Hira Jewellers in Pitampura on June 3, in which one of their gang member was killed after guards opened fire in order to prevent them from taking away a vehicle belonging to the jewellers,” said P Karunakaran, DCP (north-west).

On the night of the incident, two persons tried to break open the locks of a jeep parked in front of Hira Jewellers and escape with the vehicle.

Guards Krishan Kumar and Lalit Kumar warned the robbers, but they threatened them and later fired at them.

The guards returned fire in order to prevent them from taking away the vehicle.
A bullet hit one of the robbers who was driving the vehicle and he was later found dead by police.

The deceased was identified as Mohammed Arif of Mewat in Haryana who was wanted in several cases, the official said, adding their gang leader is Mohammed Wahid of Mewat.

Arif, who died in Hira Jewellers case, and his brother Farukh were close accomplices of Wahid, he said.
