Hindustan Aeronautics Limited said on Thursday that it had delivered the first fully fourth-stage propellant tank of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) to ISRO, the Indian Space Research Organisation.

The tank is the result of a wholly indigenous effort.

“The effort has resulted in foreign exchange savings of Rs 1.2 crore”, said R K Tyagi, Chairman of HAL, in a press note.

The propellant tank will carry 1.6 tonnes of liquid propellant Mono-Methyl Hydrazine as fuel and Mixed Oxides of Nitrogen as an oxidiser during the flight.

Technical work

The machining of all parts for this tank had been carried out at Hindustan Aeronautics.

Welding work had been carried out at the Liquid Propulsion Centre of ISRO and Hindustan Aeronautics.

The raw material is from Midhani and Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels (BHPV). According to officials, the indigenised tank was completed with cooperation among four government agencies: Hindustan Aeronautics, BHPV, Midhani and ISRO.
