Drunk ESI doctor to be terminated

Last Updated 09 August 2012, 18:51 IST

The ESI hospital doctor, who was booked by the Indiranagar police for reporting for work drunk, will be terminated from the service on Friday.

Dr Rahimunnisa, director, Directorate of ESI scheme (medical services), told Deccan Herald that the termination letter will be issued to the doctor, who was on contract, after she receives an official statement from the police and the medical superintendent. The doctor, Dr H G Srinivas, an anaesthetist, is also accused of misbehaving with a relative of a patient.

That Dr Srinivas was attached to the hospital’s intensive care unit has made the matter more serious, forcing the Indiranagar police to book a case under Section 92 of the Karnataka Police Act, 1963 against him. Wednesday morning, the Indiranagar Police had taken the doctor for medical tests to check for consumption of alcohol. Tests at the Bowring Hospital proved positive. Dr Srinivas was on night shift on Tuesday and was on duty when the incident happened.

A hospital staffer told Deccan Herald: “All the attendants sleep in the hall outside the ICU. The incident happened at around 12:30 am when everyone was sleeping. One of the doctors made an attempt to molest a woman, but she woke up and shouted. Other attendants, who also woke up, beat up the doctor and the called the police.”

Indiranagar Police said there was no complaint against any doctor about molestation or any other misbehaviour. However, they said they were open to investigate the charges of molestation, if a formal complaint is made by the victim.

Medical superintendent of ESI Hospital, Indiranagar, Dr Vijaylakshmi said she only heard rumours about the incident. “I have not received any formal complaint till now. I will definitely conduct an inquiry and take strict action against the guilty,” she added.
