Last Updated 15 August 2012, 20:33 IST

The Rajasthan government has made DNA profiling mandatory for all female foetuses found abandoned in the state.

With a rise in cases of female foeticide, the government wants to use the evidence against suspect parents and other accused.

The state home department issued a direction to police in this regard.
“I have issued orders to all police officers concerned to ensure that blood samples and other body parts required for proper DNA profiling are compulsorily preserved,” wrote Additional Chief Secretary Ashok Sampatram in his letter to Principal Health Secretary B N Sharma. These orders are in accordance with the directions of the Rajasthan High Court.

The order for DNA tests is separate from the pre-conception pre-natal and diagnostic techniques (PCPNDT) Act 1994. Recently the high court had pulled up  the government.
