A woman, who was arrested for shooting at her brother for objecting to her relationship with their uncle, said she was inspired to commit the crime after watching the Bollywood film “Ishaqzaade”. Her brother, who was shot in the head, is recovering in hospital.

BA second-year student Swati Misbrotherhra, 22, who hails from Unnao in UP, was persuaded by her uncle Anil Mishra to shoot her brother, said deputy commissioner of police (north-west) P Karunakaran.

Anil has also been arrested and a country-made pistol with a fired cartridge have been recovered.

Swati’s brother, Nitin, had brought her to their relative’s house in Shakurpur to arrange her wedding on Monday. On Wednesday, Swati quietly went to Nitin’s room when he was sleeping, and shot at him from point-blank range.

“Swati was in love with Anil, who trained her to drive a motorcycle and use his licensed firearm. Gradually, Swati’s brother Nitin found it out and was furious,” Karunakaran said.

Nitin prohibited Swati from seeing Anil, but Swati did not stop. As a result, Nitin resisted Swati from stepping out of the house without his permission for almost two months.
“However, Swati and Anil were still in touch during this period, following which Anil persuaded her to get rid of her brother,” Karunakaran added.

She told police that the movie “Ishaqzaade” inspired her to commit the crime as the heroine had used a gun. Police started investigation after Nitin was admitted to Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital in Pitampura.

Nitin told police that he had come to visit his relatives in Shakurpur with Swati.
“He was sleeping when in the wee hours of Wednesday he felt pain in his head and woke up. He was shocked to see blood oozing out of his head,” Karunakaran added.
Other family members in the house confirmed of having heard a gunshot.

A case of attempt to murder case has been filed with Subhash Place police station.
Police interrogated all family members present in the house as nothing was stolen and the entry of the assailant seemed friendly.

“It was clear that the assailant knew the layout of the house,” said Karunakaran.
Then police suspected Swati’s involvement as she looked the least concerned with the injuries caused to her brother. Also, during the time of the assault, other family members had seen her standing near the staircase leading to Nitin’s room.

“Swati later confessed to have shot her brother. She was in love with Anil. He was the mastermind behind the incident,” Karunakaran added.

Swati said Anil gave her a loaded country-made pistol 25 days ago and told her to shoot her brother as soon as possible.
