The next time you happen to pass Miller’s Road in Vasanthnagar, make sure to stop by at New Arya Bhavan — a shop that prides itself over the quality of its snacks, sweets and service, which have not changed for the last eight years.

A visit to the restaurant will fill you up so much so that you can barely move. The best thing is that one can do this without burning a hole in the pocket. The extensive range of chaats like bhel, dahi papdi chaat, dahi bhalla, chole aloo tikki and raj kachori are priced between Rs 20 and 40, while the pav bhaaji costs Rs 45 — which is still reasonable, given the quantities.

For a full hot meal, there are a variety of Indianised Chinese dishes like noodles and manchurian as well as some excellent Indian items like vegetable pulav, aloo gobi.
Those who want something with a little more filling can opt for dal makhani or the richly-flavoured palak paneer.

Interestingly, the place is more crowded on weekdays rather than the weekends. “Other than families, most of our customers are engineers since this is predominantly a corporate area. We have maximum business during the day from people who come here for a chatpata meal or from those who order home delivery on a regular basis,” shares Zameer, the manager.

He adds that of late, the combo meals have started to get popular because they are tasty, affordable and give enough food to pack and keep for the next day as well. “The Rs 50 combo has two plain parathas, gravy, pulav, raita, pickle and a sweet, while the one that costs Rs 75 includes curry, yellow dal and jeera rice as well,” he adds.

There is also a large variety of sweets to select from, with the motichur ladoo and Mysore pak being the ones that sell the most. One can even try out the juicy rasgulla, gulab jamun or the rasmalai, all of which cost only Rs 20.

A must-try at the restaurant is the badam milk, which is served chilled and is so delicious that it feels like an explosion in the mouth.
