Eight people were feared drowned after a boat capsized in a lake at Khaja Kotnur village, in the Gulbarga University police station limits, on Friday night. Four bodies have been recovered from the lake.

Superintendent of Police Praveen Pawar, who was at the site, said that the country boat normally used for fishing,  carried 15 people on a outing on the lake when it capsized. “Only five or six people were able to swim to safety,” Pawar added. The deceased are all residents of Naya Mohalla of Gulbarga city. They had gone to the lake for a picnic.

Pawar said that rescue operations and a search for the remaining bodies are ongoing. The identity of the recovered bodies could not be established immediately.
