Step by Step

Things you will need
1. A plain and even dance floor
2. Dance gear: dancing shoes and clothes
3. Salsa Music
   
STEP 1
Get in position by facing your partner. The man is the leader and the lady is the follower. Leader: place your right hand on your partner, slightly around the back. Extend your left arm diagonally to chest height with your elbow bent at a right angle and your palm raised. Grasp your partner's right hand in a loose grip; your partner's left hand should be on your right shoulder.

STEP 2
On the first beat, step forward with your left foot. Your partner will mirror each of your movements throughout the dance; for example, on the first beat she will step backward with her right foot.
 
STEP 3
Step in place with your right foot on the second beat.

STEP 4
Step back with your left foot on the third beat so that you are back in the starting position, and hold in place for the fourth beat.

STEP 5
Step back with your right foot on the fifth beat.

STEP 6
Step in place with your left foot on the sixth beat.

STEP 7
Step forward with your right foot on the seventh beat so that you are back in the starting position, and hold for the eighth beat.

STEP 8
Repeat, starting at step 2.

LEARNING JIVE
STEP 1
Start the men's jive steps by stepping straight back with the left foot. This is a rock back.

STEP 2
Lift the right foot but put it down again in the same place.

STEP 3
Move your left foot to the side, then move the right foot so it's next to the left foot. This sideways step is the chasse.

STEP 4
Step to the side again with your left foot, and pick up the right foot and set the right back down.

STEP 5
Place your right foot to the side and put your left foot next to it.

STEP 6
Pick up your right foot and move it to the side, then step back with your left foot.

STEP 7
Repeat the above jive dancing steps for the man again, slowly at first, and then gradually pick up the speed.
 
STEP 8
Use the ball of your foot while you are moving from side to side as you do the dancing steps for the jive for men. When you pause for any length of time, put your weight on your whole foot.
 
STEP 9
Practice the dancing steps of the jive for men until you are able to do them in time with the music. The count will be 1-2-3-and-4-5-and-6.
