Last Updated 06 December 2012, 19:19 IST

The Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), situated on the Manasagangotri campus, University of Mysore (UoM), will henceforth be called ‘Mukta Gangotri’.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the board of management, chaired by Vice Chancellor K S Rangappa, recently.

The university was identified with the Manasagangotri since its establishment.
The management decided to retain ‘Gangotri’ in honour of litterateur Kuvempu, who named the UoM ‘Manasagangotri.’

Indicating concept

‘Mukta’  also means ‘open’, that aptly indicates the concept of the open university.

The Open University spread on 30 acres of land adjacent to the Manasagangotri campus, has more than 3.5 lakh students across the world.

Candidates from Sri Lanka, Dubai and other countries have taken up online programmes and other courses at the university.
