The potato crop is usually sown between October 15 and December 15 for good yield. However, irrespective of the sowing period one should always remember that night temperature during the flowering time should be between 18 to 20 degree Celsius. If the temperature falls below 18 degree Celsius, the crop’s yield is reduced. However, if the temperature rises above 20 degree Celsius there are chances of tuber formation being affected and can lead to loss of crop, the release stated. The using of certified potatoes can give good yield and should be bought from a certified dealer.The potatoes which are rotting in burlap bags or affected by pests should not be bought.

The potatoes used for sowing should way anywhere between 30 gm to 125 g. The big potatoes should be cut to 2 to 3 pieces before sowing. If the knife used for cutting the potatoes is dipped in spirit or other chemical it can control the pests, it added. The potatoes should be immediately sown after first sprout. The potatoes which have wrinkle or fail to sprout or eaten by worms should not be sown.
