The Krishna Rajendra Market will remain closed on the last Tuesday of every month for carrying out extensive cleaning.

This was decided by Bruhath Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Siddaiah during his visit to the market on Friday.

He was accompanied by members of Solid Waste Management (SWM) Expert Committee. He inspected the status of cleanliness, garbage disposal mechanism, public toilets and drinking water facility inside the market.
Disposal system

On an average, about 70 tonnes of waste is generated, which mostly comprises vegetables, needing an effective garbage disposal system.

The Palike has given the go-ahead to Ashoka Biogas for a 10-tonne biogas unit inside the market. Till such time it comes up, the Palike will send vegetable waste to cattle sheds and bio-compost manufacturers.

A task force comprising SWM Expert Committee, KR Market traders, zonal commissioner, chief engineer, revenue officers and health officers will be formed to ensure cleanliness, garbage segregation, checking usage of plastic and other related issues.

A special engineering market cell to monitor biogas units and garbage disposal at markets will be set up in the BBMP. Each shop will have a special garbage trolley. The Palike will set up four gates to check entry of cattle to the market.

The 60 personnel of the Revenue and Health departments, managing the functioning of market, will, henceforth, also ensure segregation of waste. They will also minimise the use of polythene bags.
