Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has jurisdiction of over 306-sq km area beyond the Corporation limits. It extends up to Mulky and Kilpady in the north and Talapady in South, and Vamanjoor and Adyaru in the east. It is expected to cater to the housing needs of an estimated six lakh people.

The projected population of Mangalore will be 10.75 lakh in 2021. MUDA has developed sites and has plans to develop sites in its limits.  Speaking to Deccan Herald, MUDA Commissioner P G Ramesh said Mangalore Urban Development Authority has developed 120 sites in Bikarnakatte Padavu.

“We will providing road connectivity, water supply connection, UGD and other basic amenities to the sites. The sites vary in size. Paper notification on the sale of sites will be issued within two months,” he added. Keeping in mind the needs of low income group segment, sites of small dimension are also being developed.

During the recent press meet, MUDA Chairman Dr Madhava Bhandary had said that MUDA will be creating 3,000 sites in the next three to four years.  Ramesh said although MUDA had plans to acquire and develop a township at Chelyaru Padavu near Surathkal on a 200-acre plot, the area proposed for acquisition had been reduced to 50 acres in Chelyaru Padavu. The larger goal might be achieved in a phased manner.

He said “the government had okayed purchase of 200 acres land. However, we can not go for 200 acres of land at a time. So we have moved to purchase 50 acres land on which nearly 700 sites can be created. Now we are on the process of land acquisition. We are collecting ownership documents,” he added.
