<p>The decision to scrap the language paper from the Union Public Service Commission examination was a "preferential treatment" to those who know English, a retired IFS officer said here today.<br /><br /></p>.<p>"This is like giving preferential treatment to students who know English," said Pavan Varma, former IFS officer who is now an adviser to Bihar Chief Minister told PTI.<br />Varma, who was here to deliver a lecture, said the decision will leave regional language students in the lurch, and force them to shun the civil services.<br /><br />"I think a thought needs to be given to the reforms being introduced in UPSC. This is taking reforms to the extreme," Varma added.<br /><br />The new exam pattern for UPSC, with more emphasis on general studies and aptitude skills, was notified earlier this week.</p>
