ONGC will invest in the latest technologies to prevent oil spills from its pipelines in the country, Sudhir Vasudeva, Chairman and Managing Director of the state-run firm said today.

Addressing a press conference at ONGC's Cauvery Asset Complex at Karaikal here, he said the company was keen on ensuring that the pipelines did not cause any spillage.

Asked about the oil spill from an abandoned pipeline at Anaimangalam village in Nagapattinam district in November 2012 in which 10 acres of agricultural land were damaged, he said ONGC would invest in the latest technologies to prevent such spills in future.

On demands by Cauvery Delta farmers for payment of royalty for letting the pipelines pass through their fields, he said royalty could be paid only to the state government and not to individuals.

On the oil and gas production scenario in the country, the ONGC chief said out there was a huge mismatch between demand and production.
