A pre-university student and a debt-ridden businessman committed suicide in separate incidents in the City on Thursday.

Akshaya (17), a first PU student at a private college in the City, hanged herself at her house in Vijinapura, Ramamurthy Nagar. She was a native of Kerala and was residing with her parents. On Thursday evening, she was found playing with her friends, and at around 8 pm, she went inside her room and locked herself up.

Minutes later, a few of her friends tried calling her on her mobile phone, but there was no response. They called her mother and told her Akshaya was not answering the mobile phone. The mother knocked on the door and there was no response. She got worried and peeped through the window and found her hanging, struggling to breathe.

She informed her husband, who broke open the door and lowered Akshaya. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead. The police who visited the spot found a death note which stated that she did not deserve to live. The parents informed the police that she was doing well in her studies and had cleared her first PU examination.

In the other incident, Jaya Gandhi, 57, a resident of Kumbalgodu, was found hanging from a tree behind the Bachelor of Physical Education hostel on the Bangalore University campus.

The incident came to light on Friday morning, when a few passersby noticed a body hanging from a tree. They informed the police who visited the spot and examined the body. The police found a death note written in Tamil and later learnt the victim had taken the extreme step, unable to pay huge debts.

Gandhi, who had suffered heavy loss in his business, had borrowed money from many people and was unable to repay it, the police said.
