Sandeep for Scirocco Cup

Last Updated 02 May 2013, 18:17 IST

Following an impressive display in the Volkswagen Polo R Cup 2012 Pro-Category, Chennai’s Sandeep Kumar will now put his skills to the test against the best in the business when the 2013 season of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup kicks off from Hockenheim on May 4.

The 21-year-old was part of the training camp in Bavaria from March and also took part in pre-season testing sessions last month where he finished a promising eighth fastest over two days. He is the only Indian on the roster this season.

“I am very eager to drive in the Scirocco this season. It is very different from what I used to deal with when I was karting or even when I was in the Formula cars. Everything is much faster,” Sandeep told Deccan Herald before flying to Germany for his first race.

“The great thing about this series is that a lot of former greats will be taking part in the race so this gives me the scope to go and talk to them and get a lot of information.

“Basically there will be a lot of exposure for me and that will help me in the long run,” said the youngster, who began racing at the Madras Motor Sport Club under the guidance of Akbar Ebrahim around five years ago.

Chance for Ghorpade

Last season’s Formula Pilota champion and five-time National karting champion Parth Ghorpade will test a Formula 3 car at the Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA) in the second week of May.

The programme will be conducted under the guidance of Ferrari engineer Luca Baldisserri, former Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine and seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher.

“I am really looking forward to testing the F3 car at the academy,” said Parth. “Ferrari is a name that goes hand in hand with motorsport and it is an honour for me to be present at the academy. It will also give me a better understanding of how a big team works and what is required to be successful in racing.”

The 19-year-old is currently participating in the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS Championship and continues to test and race for BVM Racing.

He will head to Italy for a two-day test in the ALPS car before heading to Fiorano to FDA.
