Rains claim 3 lives

Three people were killed in rain-related incidents in North Karnataka on Sunday night and Monday.

Putrappa, 50, was struck dead by lightning when he went to cut firewood at Devagondanahalli in Hoovinahadagali taluk of Bellary district on Sunday night.

Mahadevi Bhagavanta Harijan, 40, died when lightning struck her at Chikkapadasalagi village of Jamakhandi taluk in Bagalkot district. She was washing clothes in the river at the time of the incident.

Erappa Mamadapur, 16, was killed when the flying asbestos sheets of roof of his house struck him at Badagi village of Athani taluk in Belgaum.

Other places

There was heavy rain from Sunday night to Monday morning at several places in Bellary, Dharwad, Haveri, Bagalkot, Gulbarga and other districts. Rain brought temperature down in Gulbarga city, known for its hot summer.

Davangere city received 87 mm of rainfall in a single day, against the average of 84.2 mm for the month. Many houses were damaged and livestock were killed at several places in the district. There were reports of rain in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and from Chikmagalur districts also.
