Some work, some fun

The HR executives of most corporate companies in the City make it a point to organise inter-departmental competitions and activities for their employees. On their part, employees support these programmes. Whether it is a New Year party, a cultural competition or even a sports-related event, they show a lot of enthusiasm and interest in putting up a good show.

Neha, an IT professional, says that the HR department in her organisation is quite active when it comes to organising such events throughout the year. “Last year, during Deepavali, we had a special competition where one department was pitted against the other to decorate work centres. So all of us put in our best and stayed back after work to plan our decorations. It was a lot of fun,” she says. “Such competitions are followed by snacks or dinner. We interact with other departments. It helps in enhancing our team work,” she adds.

HR professionals feel that it is important for employees to be motivated in different ways, as that enhances the quality of their work. “It is not just the quality of work which is improved — these activities develop the personal skills of employees, give them confidence and act as a break from the normal routine. Recently, we had a table tennis tournament and we got a very good response from them. These activities improve the relationship between the employee and employer as well,” says Tiyasha, an HR professional.
Poornima Sathyanarayana, the director of Central Parking Systems, adds that many activities are conducted throughout the year in her organisation. “The induction is a big event in our company. Occasions like Women’s Day are celebrated with a lot of fanfare too. Along with this, we also have a biannual award ceremony. We have a special audit tool which helps in concluding the result. The award function identifies the best manager, best unit, best staff etc. We also have monthly programmes where an employee is awarded based on his or her performance,” says Poornima. Leena, an MBA faculty member in BMS College of Engineering, says that such activities are a great way to motivate employees.
“Having small meets and get-togethers like celebrating a festival or a party increases employee satisfaction as well as their overall concentration. Every employee waits for them and lends a helping hand in organising these events,” sums up Leena.
