Fields flooded as Hemavathi canal breaches

Last Updated 14 July 2013, 18:03 IST

Hemavathi left bank canal near Vaddarahalli jackwell in the taluk breached on Sunday. Water gushing out in large quantity from the canal has filled up the Kalasindha ta- nk, forcing the authorities to divert the water flow path to Amanikere tank in the town, by digging the sluice.

The gushing water has marooned the neighbouring fields and has destroyed Black gram and cowpea crops. The loss is yet to be estimated. Besides, the people in Kalasindha village are finding it difficult to get access to the town as the road next to the Kalasindha kere has completely been submerged. Water is flowing four feet above the road. As a result, people have to make a detour to reach the village. A vehicle that was stuck in the flooded stretch was later pulled to the shore by the villagers.

As a precautionary measure, canal water is routed to the tank and the officials at the Hemavathi canal have been asked not to release water into the canal. Water level is expected to come down by Monday afternoon after which the repair work will be taken up.

According to Superintending Engineer Padmanabh, 2,600 cusecs of water was released to Hemavathi canal.
