Rahul ton powers KSCA XI

Hosts grind Goa on opening day, post 334/3

Rahul ton powers KSCA XI

Riding on a brilliant hundred from KL Rahul, KSCA XI seized the initiative against Goa Cricket Association on the first day of their second-round match in the Safi Darashah Trophy tournament at the M Chinnaswamy stadium here on Tuesday.

Opting to bowl hoping that there would be some assistance because of overcast conditions, Goa were in for a big disappointment as they were sent on a leather hunt by Rahul (162, 240b, 22x4, 3x6) who produced a masterclass, handling both pace and spin with equal ease.

A sharp shower in the post-tea session held up play for close to an hour and the hosts might need to keep an eye on the weather if they are to get maximum points.
Robin Uthappa, who scored a triple ton against Jharkhand in the last match, fell early on in the innings, lbw to Sayyed Baddiuzzamma, but Ganesh Satish (91, 166b, 9x4) and Rahul, in a stand worth 197, grinded the Goa bowlers.

Rahul made his intentions clear even before lunch by attacking off-break bowler Amit Yadav when he launched him over deep mid-wicket and followed it with a classy drive back over the bowler’s head for another maximum. Yadav was on the receiving end and he closed the day with figures of 12-0-74-0.  Satish, who was milking the bowling at the other end, opened up with two delightful drives down the ground to bring up his 50.

Both batsmen were particularly severe against Yadav and the left-arm spin of Darshan Misal and they derived great pleasure by lofting the ball over the extra cover region.

Goa, without their frontline left-arm tweaker Shadab Jakati who is playing in the Minor Leagues in England, were being run ragged by the contrasting styles of Satish and Rahul.

KSCA XI were 235/1 at tea and things were looking very bleak for the visitors but a lapse in concentration from Rahul gave Baddiuzzamma his second wicket. Rahul tried to pull him but only managed a top-edge which was gobbled by Harshad Gadekar at fine leg.

The same bowler removed Satish, who gave catching practice to Buddhadev Mangaldas at mid off.

Goa thought they had a chance to pick a few more wickets before close but skipper CM Gautham and Manish Pandey ensured that KSCA XI maintained the status quo.
