Bayern prove too good for Barcelona

Coach Pep Guardiola scored a point when his team Bayern Munich defeated his former side Barcelona 2-0 at the Uli Hoeness Cup thanks to goals from Phillip Lahm and Mario Mandzukic.

Barcelona were unable to break the spell against the German record champions Bayern Munich, three months after they were eliminated 0-7 on aggregate by the Bavarians in the UEFA Champions League semifinals.

From the kick-off on Wednesday, Bayern dictated the pace on the pitch and brought about the first chance of the encounter. The hosts were soon rewarded 15 minutes into the match when Lahm headed home a Franck Ribery cross.

Barcelona almost responded through Sergi Roberto, who pulled the ball wide under pressure from Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

It was an evenly balanced first half as both sides looked for offensive options. However, Thomas Mueller squandered two opportunities before Barcelona’s Cristian Tello failed to convert just before the break.
