Celebrating the music of Mauro Giuliani, ‘Le Giulianiane’ was organised by The Bangalore School of Music at the Alliance Francaise recently.

The evening saw artistes Dinesh Khundrakpam, Poireinganba Thangjam, Nandini Sudhir and Jason Dass perform on the guitar, while Aditi Shivaraman was on vocals. The evening’s programme consisted of different musical pieces like the ‘Grand Overture’, ‘La Rossiniana’ and ‘Sonata in G’, followed by ‘Variation on a Theme of GF Handel’, ‘Duets and Trios’ and a ‘Selection of Flamenco Guitar Music’.  The musical compositions, which varied from slow and medium to fast notes, kept the audience involved and when the artistes broke for a break, many eagerly waited for them to come back and continue the performance. The audience was a mix of students of the music school, the elderly and young professionals.

Nandini, one of the performers, who has been learning the guitar for five years with the school, says that she doesn’t care for rock music, unlike most of her generation. “Classical music is what appeals to me as it gives me peace and has a sense of tranquility. One feels relaxed after listening or playing classical music,” she adds.
Talking about her experience with western classical music, Aditi comments, “I do love pop numbers, but I appreciate classical music and enjoy singing it too. If one were to ask me how the experiences differed, it would have to be in terms of the technique.
In classical, I have to use my false voice while in pop, one can use their original voice.”

The audience members, who were deeply impressed by the performance, were all praises for the artistes. Shubha Krishnan, an IT professional who wishes to join the music school, says, “My friend’s child studies at the school and I’ve heard him perform. I’ve been wanting to join a guitar class too. Seeing the joy on the faces of the performers while playing the guitar, I’m convinced that it is the right instrument for me.

The performance was stupendous.” Firoza, a music connoisseur, opines, “It is highly courageous of these young artistes to perform in front of such a gathering. It feels good to see them improving with every performance and I’m confident that one day, these kids will become true professionals. Kudos to them”.

Margarita, another audience member, says, “The little ones are phenomenal. I’m here with my daughter, who is a student of the music school and watching this event is good exposure for her. The depth of the performances is something that is worth noting.”
