Girl students to get karate, judo training

Last Updated 31 August 2013, 20:10 IST

In an effort to help girl students in government high schools protect themselves through self defence, the State government has introduced karate and judo training for them across the State.

The government has set aside Rs 66.63 lakh for the purpose during the current fiscal which will see karate training being imparted by physical education and training teachers in 4,442 government high schools.

Master trainers will impart training to government physical training teachers from September 16 to 20 and training for students will commence on September 30.  A circular to this effect was issued on August 29 by the Department of Public Instruction under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Project Director Subodh Yadav said self defence mechanism helps in boosting confidence of young girls who often face various types of threats and odd situations.

“It may not be able to teach all the techniques of karate and judo to students because the course will be for a short duration of 30 days. But those techniques which are required to defend themselves physically would be taught. Our measure would bring qualitative change in the lives of girl students,” he added.

The 30-day capsule of training would be of 45 minutes duration per day. The government intends to introduce the training programme even in higher primary schools and government aided schools in due course.
