A Border Security Force (BSF) officer, seriously injured after being attacked by smugglers at the India-Bangladesh border in June, died at a hospital here Thursday, an official release said.

Posted in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, Majumdar was hit by a speeding vehicle carrying illegal immigrants and smugglers, when he tried to intercept it.

"Despite receiving serious head injuries and fractures, Majumdar guided BSF jawans under his command and chased the vehicle which resulted in to the arrest of 28 illegal Bangladeshis who had entered Indian territory," the release said.

This is the second instance of a BSF officer being killed this year.

In August, ASI Rajender Singh, who too was attacked by alleged Bangladeshi smugglers in a separate incident, succumbed to his injuries.

According to the statement, a total of 50 BSF personnel have been seriously injured in attacks by Bangladeshi and Indian smugglers while two have died.
