PIL against manual scavenging

The PIL, expressing concern over the recent instances of deaths while cleaning manholes states that there has been no respite for workers despite several reports to improve working conditions of sweepers and scavengers. The petition seeks to prevent physical entry into manholes and frequent medical examination of the workers. It has also sought a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of workers killed while cleaning manholes.

The division bench comprising Chief Justice P D Dinakaran and Justice V G Sabhahit adjourned the matter.
