No religion teaches terrorism: Israeli ambassador

Last Updated 26 November 2009, 13:57 IST

Sofer was here at a memorial service held at a Synagogue which is celebrating its 125th anniversary celebrations of the Kenneseth Eliyahu Synagogue at Kalaghoda in south Mumbai to pay homage to all victims of last year's Mumbai attacks. "Terror is terror. They don't understand any religion. The terrorists misuse and disgrace the name of Islam. No religion teaches us to spread violence or hatred or terrorism. We all must together fight against it and ensure that the terrorists do not achieve their task," he said.

"We need to understand what makes them do such horrible acts, why they do it, who asks them to do it," asked Sofer. On the attack on Jews at Nariman House last November, Sofer said, "This was the first time that Jews were targeted in India. It is sad that Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg his wife Rivka and four others were killed in such a gruesome manner. But baby Moshe was lucky enough to have escaped." It was a terrible attack as hundreds of innocent people were killed by ruthless terrorists for three days, he said.

Two terrorists, Babar Imran and Nasir, laid siege to Nariman House from November 26 to 28, killing Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, his pregnant wife Rivka and four other guests.
