SHOW TIME

A popular music store in association with a movie channel held a film screening on Brigade Road recently as part of their Friday Film Club. Pierre Salvadori’s Priceless was the chosen movie. Audrey Tautou and Gad Elmaleh are paired opposite each other in this light romantic comedy. The movie is written by Benoît Graffin and Pierre Salvadori.

The story revolves around Irene, a gold-digging enchantress and the working class Jean, pretending to be a millionaire, who is naively in love with her. Irene meets Jean in a hotel bar and spends the night with him. Her fiance discovers her indiscretion and breaks up with her. Struck by sudden poverty Irene returns to Jean, and discovers that he was just an enamoured waiter who works at the establishment. After much persuasion Jean convinces Irene to stay with him for as long as he can afford the lifestyle she demands. The barter leaves him bankrupt. Jean ends up in the same profession as Irene, taking up residence with a rich lady.

Now that they are part of the same professional fraternity, Irene teaches Jean the tricks of the trade, so to speak. The rest of the movie revolves around the hide and seek game Irene and Jean play with their respective partners, their clandestine affair, its discovery and the eventual fate of the lovers.

This critically acclaimed movie has a funny script, and an easy feel. It’s a movie you’d love to watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon. At no point in the movie is one at doubt as to what’s going to happen next. It’s not deep, no discussion on themes, patterns or intent is needed. It’s a fun movie that’s full of little delightful scenes.  

 The lights were a little too bright and there was a constant buzz of people walking around browsing, talking and buying things. But what is nice about these weekly screenings is the movie selection. The movies picked are interesting and eclectic. The crowds aren’t large either.
