Two arrested, one juvenile apprehended

A 19-year-old girl, who hails from Nepal, was allegedly gang-raped by three persons, including a juvenile, in south Delhi’s Mahipalpur late on Tuesday.

Probe have arrested two men – Sandeep, 25, and Ashish, 20 – and apprehended the juvenile.

According to police, the woman came to India 12 years ago with another woman known to her. Initially, she was staying in the woman’s house in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district and came to the capital alone two years ago.

“She stayed with an NGO in south-east Delhi’s Sangam Vihar. Last year, she turned 18 and was sent to a Nari Niketan,” a police officer said. During her stay there, she met a man named Amrish, a resident of Mahipalpur, who told her that he could help her get a job as a domestic help.

Amrish used to ask her to leave the Nari Niketan and to stay with him in Mahipalpur. “Hoping for a better future, the woman left the Nari Niketan on Monday and came to meet Amrish in Mahipalpur,” the officer added.

At 10.30 pm on Tuesday, she went to Mahipalpur to  buy food and lost her way. It is alleged that Sandeep, Ashish and the juvenile gang raped her after seeing her wandering alone.

On the pretext of showing her the direction towards Amrish’s address, the accused took her to a forest area near Indira Gandhi International Airport. Once they reached a secluded area, the two men and the juvenile overpowered the teenager and took turns to rape her.

Police said the juvenile was apprehended from the spot when the woman screamed for help after spotting a PCR van passing from the area. The other two accused managed to flee, but were later arrested.

Ashish, Sandeep and the juvenile live with families in Rangpuri Pahari near Vasant Kunj.  The woman was taken to Vasant Kunj South police station, where she narrated her ordeal. Her medical examination was conducted at Safdarjung Hospital, which confirmed sexual assault.

A case of gang rape has been registered with Vasant Kunj South police station over the woman’s statement and medical examination.
