Infosys highest IT patent seeker from B'lore

With information technology (IT) rising as a pre-eminent domain in India, patenting in IT is happening at a brisk pace.

Researchers studying patent trends under the India Patent Office revealed that Infosys is the number one and largest applicant for IT patents from within Bangalore and third largest applicant countrywide.

As of March 2014, out of Bangalore, Infosys filed 81 applications for IT patents, followed by Tejas Networks Limited with 40.

HCL Technologies is behind Infosys and Tejas Networks with 36 application filings.

Countrywide, researchers say TCS Limited is the largest applicant for IT patents having filed 162 applications.

Samsung India Software Operations Private Limited comes in second with 135 applications, Infosys third with 81, Tejas fourth at 40 and HCL fifth with 36.

These are the top five Indian IT companies seeking patents, that have in all filed 454 applications on a national basis.

Researchers say that the maximum patents have been filed in data processing (31 per cent), computer system architecture (26 per cent), data communication work (17 per cent) and application of IT in other sectors (15 per cent).

A senior researcher said, “Patents have sought mostly in the categories of data processing, data communication (transfer of data from one computer to another over Internet or Intranet), computer system architecture (modification in basic architecture of a computer system or hardware), mobile communication and application of IT in other sectors.”
