Postgraduate student found dead at IISc hostel

Last Updated 27 April 2014, 20:18 IST

A postgraduate aerospace engineering student was found dead in his hostel room on the IISc campus in Sadashivanagar police station limits on Sunday morning.

The highly-decomposed body of Prabhakaran, 23, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his room. It is suspected that he committed suicide four or five days ago.

Students staying in Prabhakaran’s neighbouring rooms complained of foul smell to the security guards. When the guards went to check, it came to light that the stench was coming from Prabhakaran’s room. They knocked on the door, but there was no response.

When they peeped in through the window, the guards found the student’s body hanging from the fan, police said. There was no suicide note found.

“Prabhakaran’s parents who reside in Tamil Nadu have been informed and are expected to arrive soon. They may throw some light on the incident. We spoke to his friends and they have no clue why he took the extreme step, “ said a police officer. Sadashivanagar police have registered a case.

A PhD student of aerospace engineering, who did not want to be named, told Deccan Herald, “I did not know him personally, but have met him a couple of times.
According to some of his classmates, Prabhakaran was a very good student and he had, in fact, got placed already.

“Academics was probably not a factor in his death. There was, however, some talk about him being in a relationship that may not have been approved by his family.”       A hostelmate said that some of his friends told him that Prabhakaran had some personal problems. They pointed out that he had been very depressed for over a month.

“All of us have single rooms and there is hardly any interaction between us, except with classmates or friends,” he said.
